Distracted to the Extreme - Or Moaning Monday

I think it has been more than a week since I last transcribed one of my grandfather's letters. I have so allowed myself to get distracted by some other Percival families. It certainly is easy to do. Then I distracted myself with working on all the new stuff Family Search Labs has added to their site. It sure has left me with a lot of census to go through, which I will tackle soon, hopefully before they hit the century mark, as they stand at 63 now!

Over at Heritage Happens last Friday, Cheryl posted Funeral Cards for Funeral Friday. I like the idea, especially of posting cards of people whom I don't know. My aunt and my mother-in-law both gave me stacks of them, and a good number of them, I have no idea who the people were. So maybe if I post these, someone will see them and claim them. But that's another project. After I put my hands on them again, that is. I'm not sure I've seen any of these since we moved here, and if I did, I can't imagine where they are. I certainly hope they aren't with the framed wall photos we seemed to have lost in our move from Michigan.

Over the weekend, I let the storms here in middle Tennessee really distract me. Fortunately for us - knock on wood - we have not seen any of the flooding that the Nashville area has. All I can say is we've already got our normal May rainfall and it is only May 3rd!

But you know, sometimes distractions are great. They let you work on something that interests you and gives you time and energy to re-focus on your project, so don't feel guilty when you are pulled away from a project or when you step away from it.

Also, today is Monday, which is Relatively Speaking Day, and it is Karen's turn. Check her out at Genealogy Frame of Mind.

Back to work now!

What Do I Work on Next?

I'm finishing up cleaning out my "folders."  These folders are the ones on my PC that hold my image files for addition to my database. I have a census left to do and then four death and/or marriage notices to enter. Then basically I am done with that stuff.

Then, if I choose, there is a bunch of Chinn family stuff to work on that I work on in between working on census, births, marriages, deaths, etc.

Or I could go outside with DH and get a head start on the gardening since the weather will be nice for a few days.

I wonder which one will win?
--------

I wrote the above a few days ago and this is how it played out. First I started working on my Chinn family. The Chinns are a direct line and I've been working on the lines all the way back into Virginia when the legitimate and illegitimate lines meet. What can I say, it is an interesting family.

I worked on that for a couple days and then worked outside doing some spring cleanup in preparation for DH to throw down fertilizer and pre-emergent on the grass. He used the leaf sweeper, which was made necessary by the fact that our next door neighbor's lawn people only blew her leaves into piles, so they ended up on our lawn during the last heavy winds. I hooked up the vacuum attachment to our electric blower and sucked up all the leaves around the house, in the wells around the vents in the back of the house and around the downspouts and the bushes. I did a little raking around the birdbath and feeder out front and sucked lint out of the dryer vent.

On DH's trip to the local box hardware store I scouted out plants. I'm looking for some BIG ornamental grasses. While I really love our west side neighbor, I don't love her grandson's vehicles that she allows him to park on the side of her house. I think some of those nice tall grasses will fit the job nicely.  I'm looking for a red hot poker "Lola."  It is interesting and colorful. And those flowers are gorgeous!

More Distractions

First, let me say I would rather work on my family history than almost anything else. I absolutely am crazy about finding things. It doesn't even have to be my family.

So imagine my mood when I am pulled away from a research project by printer problems. Such was the case last week. I was trying to print a couple of 4 x 6 inch borderless photos from my niece's wedding in 2008. These were pictures with most of my siblings. Even after hours of dealing with Hewlett-Packard's outsourced-to-a-foreign-country help, I still cannot get these photos to print without chopping off heads. Or if I do, they are no longer borderless photos. I want them specifically for a collage frame that specifically uses 4 x 6 photos. I have tried everything. The other problem was that my printer did not want to pull the photo paper through. It was so frustrating. I felt the 4 hours I spent on this was a total waste of time except for the photo paper thing. I am thinking about pulling out my little portable travel printer which is a Canon and seeing how that does the photos.

It is frustrating when you purchase a product specifically for a particular use and it does not work the way it is supposed to. And, because of the irritating problems with this printer, I am seriously considering the purchase of a multifunction that is anything but an HP.

Distractions

Are you as easily distracted as I am? Sometimes it is a good thing and sometimes it is just, well, distracting.

Yesterday I was attempting to search for a Charles Isham in New York, born about 1824 and died before 1909. I was able to find him on the 1900 Census in Schoharie county, New York, which is where I expected him to be. Only the indexer (for Ancestry) has him listed as Charles QEHERU.

Has anyone actually ever done indexing for Ancestry? Rumor has it they are using people from other countries. Other rumors are that they are using OCR (optical character recognition.) Personally, I think trained chimps could do a better job on indexing.

Oh, but I am getting distracted, again.  What I meant to say is that after finding Charles & his wife, Mary on the 1900 census, I went to the Old Fulton Postcards site to search for Charles Isham. I found lots of hits, but they weren't the right Charles Isham. I kept getting hits for Mary Lincoln and her husband Charles Isham. Lots of hits. This is Mary Lincoln, granddaughter of Abe and oldest daughter of Robert Lincoln. Normally, I would just ignore these hits, but since I have a connection to the Lincolns, I retrieved Mary Lincoln Isham's obituary and the announcement of their marriage. If you've ever had occasion to search for newspaper articles on this site, you will know that it can take a while for the site to display the search results.  When this happens, I try to open another tab in Internet Explorer and check out the genweb page or any other site that pops to mind to narrow down the search parameters.  Often I get distracted there too!

Now I think I should further distract myself and go hunting for Charles Isham, husband of Mary Lincoln, to see if I can find an obituary for him, since he predeceased her.

What was I working on again?
