Tantalizing Information

Did you ever come across a death certificate that starts off with a cause of death with words like:

"accidentally shot by 32 cal Winchester rifle in ..." and then parts of the rest are just about unreadable? I'm putting it out here for opinions.  Click on it for a better view! Thanks!

  1. Don't you hate it with that happens? My guess is it says "in hands of himself and Richard C______." The 2nd letter of Richard's last name is either u or a, the next 2 letters are probably lh and the rest could be about anything. Anyway sounds like they were struggling with the rifle and it went off.

  2. Wow! How sad! I agree with Linda on what it says. Maybe Richard C___ was a friend. Check the 1920 census to see if there is a young Richard living near that family. Bet that story made the papers.

  4. I was pretty close - I thought his last name was Calhoun - the only Richard I find in Greenup, Kentucky was Richard Callihan, living in District 7, but enumerated several pages earlier than the Chinns.

    Thanks for the help!

  5. I was way off, then, as I thought Richard's last name might be Walker! I agree with the rest though. He was only 14. Maybe the story made a local paper?

  6. Can't find a local paper online for that time frame.

  7. I just checked back to see if anyone figured it out for sure and noticed how flip my opening comment sounds under the circumstances of such a tragic event. Sorry about that, I probably shouldn't be trying to write at 1 a.m.

  8. I didn't think it was flip at all. And thanks for your help. Sometimes having different eyes look at it really helps.
